Frostbite & Mostly Small Bites at Rayburn

Posted on January 28, 2022 Written by Brent Stafford

The Southeast Texas B.A.S.S. Nation held its 2022 first & second events at Sam Rayburn January 22nd & 23rd, where Cassels-Boykin Boat Ramp & Pavilion was the host facility.  A meeting was held Friday evening where Assistant Director Matt Russell went over new expectations for 2022, which includes more financial transparency, new and deeper payouts, as well as a modified weigh bag procedure.

Day 1 – After a major cold front on Thursday, Saturday morning freezing temperatures played havoc on some anglers’ equipment.  Frozen steering & throttle cables, and cold starting outboards made launch difficult.  Nonetheless, the 118 angler field were ready to go by 7:00 AM after the National Anthem.

At the end of the day, only 10 anglers weighed in weighed in limits with 40% of the field with no keepers.  However, while the top angler Chris Glass only had 3 keepers to weigh, he managed a 16.81 pound bag anchored by an 8.37 lunker and tournament Big Bass!  Chris  used Lowrance SI to locate laydowns in 15-25 foot of water near creeks channels, drains, & flats near creek channel bends by using Drop shot & Ned rig. The fish were caught with Lew’s Crush spinning reel and Old 18 Hollow Point series 7’1″ spinning rod.  Line was 10lb Diawa 8X braid and a fluorocarbon leader, Gene Larew plastics.  2nd Place went to Jason Gunter with a 5-fish limit for 14.89, followed by Wesley Baxley with 4-fish for 13.52, anchored by 2nd Big Bass of 7.28 pounds.

Day 2 – Sunday morning was slightly colder as the previous day, but with very light to no wind.  Fortunately the anglers were able to defrost as the limits (14) and bag weights improved over Saturday.  Ed Caskey earned First Place with his limit of 16.35 anchored by a nice 5.64, which was 2nd Big Bass.  Ed stated day 1: cold conditions, went to a no name bank near Cassels Boykin and caught a 3lb bass quickly.  The spot seemed promising. Then caught a limit, all on a Bill Lewis Rat-L trap crawfish color.  He decided to leave after getting 5 fish in the boat, hoping the spot would still have potential for day 2. Day 2:  Similar conditions on day 2.  Went back to the same area and things were slow early in the morning. I stayed persistent and things started to turn on about mid morning. The bite did not last long, but it was just long enough for me to get another limit on the same type of lure. Wesley Baxley had another good day with a limit of 15.67, followed by Tim Jahn with 5 for 14.61.  Using a “small lipless crankbait”, Chris Brewsaugh landed a 6.14 earning Big Bass for the tournament.

Thank you to the Nacogdoches Bass Club, Houston Bass Bandits, Vidor Bass Anglers, and Beaumont Bass Anglers for assisting with set-up & weigh-in duties.

February 19th will be our 3rd event. It will be at Toledo Bend out of San Miguel Park

Knight & Curtsinger Take 1st TBTT Event of 2022

Posted on January 16, 2022 Written by Brent Stafford

Team Results
Big Bass

This time the weather predictions were correct. High winds were predicted for Saturday on Choke Canyon and we got ’em. One of the anglers checked during the day….sustained 35 with gusts to 51 mph. Because of the high winds, trailering was allowed and all teams got off the water safely! It was tough fishing for everybody. Only 3 limits came to the scales.

Randy Knight and Michael Curtsinger with The Bass Club took first place with a five fish limit of 21.84 lbs. That stringer included an awesome kicker…..a 10.08 lb hoss and netted them a check for $1000. Michael gets the credit for that one!! They proved once again that big fish can be caught in winter weather conditions. Randy and Michael motored to the East end to get back to fish they had located the day before, and only speared a couple waves in the process.

Second place, and the early favorite, was the team of Colby Bryant and Wesley Baxley also with The Bass Club, posting a five fish limit that weighed 19.94 lbs. They had a nice kicker that went 6.14 lbs. Launching at Calliham they started across the lake and rounded the point. All they could see were whitecaps and trees, thought better of it and stayed in the Calliham area until it got to be better light. Then they made it across the lake to the North side to their fish and It paid off with a $500 check for their efforts.

Third place went to the team of Brian Jones and Matt Russell with The Bass Club. Their five fish limit weighed 13.8 lbs. Brian and Matt launched and fished up the river. Brian and Matt placed 6th at the 2021 National Team Championship event on Lake Eufala out of 199 teams from across the country.

Our next Qualifying Event will be on O.H. Ivie, February 12th launching out of the Kennedy Park Ramp near the dam. Join us for another tournament in our hunt for big bass this year.

The Texas BASS Nation Team of Brian Jones & Matt Russell land in 6th place after day 1 of the BASSMASTER Team Championship at Lake Eufaula, Alabama. This is a very impressive accomplishment against 179 Teams from around the country.

WOW, what a great start!! They are in position to move up on Day 2 and we wish them well! We hope they are fishing against each other on Day 3 and Day 4. That means one of them may make the BASSMASTER Classic!

The leading duo after Day 2 of this week’s Team Championship will claim a $20,600 cash prize provided by Ranger/Mercury, part of a $91,600 total purse that will be divvied among the Top 35 teams.

The Top 3 teams (six anglers) also will advance to the Bassmaster Classic Fish-Off portion of the championship. They’ll have their team weights zeroed and they’ll fish individually on Friday and Saturday with the leader clinching the final spot in the 2022 Academy Sports + Outdoors Bassmaster Classic presented by Huk. The Classic will be held March 4-6 on South Carolina’s Lake Hartwell.

Day 2 of the Bassmaster Team Championship will begin at 6:15 a.m. CT from Lakepoint State Park Marina. Weigh-in is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. at Lakepoint.
