Badgett & Wiman Take TBTT #3 on Pines

Posted on March 13, 2022 Written by Brent Stafford

Saturday 3/12/22

Team Results
Big Bass

TBTT Team Standings

The day started at Jackrabbit Grill where all seven teams gathered for breakfast. It was a chilly morning at 27 degrees and a light breeze. We were comparing how much ice was on boat covers and front decks. Some teams didn’t get their compartment lids open until later in the morning either with a little sun or a screwdriver breaking the ice bond or both!!

Gregg Badgett & Derris Wiman with the At-Large Team took first place at the third Texas Bassmaster Team Trail qualifier on Lake O’ the Pines. They brought 4 fish to the scales for a 15.93 lb total weight and first place. Congratulations!!

Brent Stafford and Tom Chandler with Nacogdoches Bass Club took second place and big bass with a three fish bag that went 10.21 lbs. Their kicker fish was seven pounds even.

Third place went to Thomas Ferro and Ricky Bishop with Seven Coves Bass Club. They had two solid fish that weighed 9.66 lbs.

The fourth qualifier event for 2022 will be on Lake Fork, April 9th at Lake Fork Resort.

Twenty-five New Fish Habitat Structures Added to Canyon Lake

CANYON LAKE– Anglers who visit Canyon Lake will have additional fishing spots to target thanks to recently installed structures intended to improve the habitat of sport fish species including largemouth bass, crappie and sunfish.

These structures are the result of an annual, ongoing collaboration launched in 2005 by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD), the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Canyon Bass Club of San Marcos and the Water Oriented Recreation District (WORD) of Comal County.

Canyon Lake is a typical highland reservoir with steep rocky banks and little natural cover for fish. Plastic structures and brush can attract fish and provide additional habitat for species such as largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, crappie, and sunfish. In January 2022, 25 Mossback brand fish habitat structures were added to the fishery at four existing sites.

“This project is a fantastic value for the public and anglers,” said TPWD District Supervisor Patrick Ireland. “It gives you a targeted area to fish. You can find the locations of the habitat structures on the TPWD Canyon Lake Fish Attractor Project website.”

This collaboration has established a total 44 sites on Canyon Lake. Grants from WORD and Friends of Reservoirs Foundation provided funding for this year’s project. The Canyon Bass Club of San Marcos, a Bass Anglers Sportsman Society (BASS) Nation affiliated club, provided most of the labor to assemble the habitat structures with support from USACE, TPWD and other volunteers.

“The Texas BASS Nation loves to see partnerships like this,” said Dave Terre, Texas BASS Nation Conservation Director. “Together we can accomplish many things. We all have the same goal in mind to make fishing better.”

The GPS coordinates for these new habitat structures along with structures on other lakes are publicly available online. Anglers can enter these coordinates into their GPS.

Anglers can learn more about fishing in the state of Texas through the TPWD fishing website.

Justin Royal Takes 3rd Event in SE Region

Posted on February 22, 2022 Written by Brent Stafford

The Texas B.A.S.S. Nation Southeast Region held its 3rd event of 2022, February 19th, out of San Miguel Park.  The day started with a 2.5 hour fog delay, cold temps that covered anglers equipment with a nice layer of frost.  While the anglers were concerned about missing the early bite, safety was priority.  However, the Region Directors (encouraged by the anglers) agreed to delay the anglers check-in time 1 hour.

Some anglers were able to make the bite happen, but most reports showed those were few and far between as 31% of the field did not weigh fish.  However, someone always can find them, and Vidor Bass Anglers Association Justin Royal did with a consistent 5-fish limit weighing 17.43 lbs.

Justin’s bigger fish were biting early in the first hour of daylight. “We left at 9:05 and pulled up to the first spot, and the 7th cast caught a 3.5.”, said Justin.  “This gave me confidence to stick with the pattern of cranking channel swings with a 6th Sense Crush Flat 75x in Wild Shad color, on a Power Tackle PGC 173.  He ran with that the rest of the day and was able to put together a solid limit.

BJ Tarr with The Bass Club took Big Bass for the weekend. He caught that Big Bass using a Kistler Argon 7′ light medium heavy fishing rod and on a 1/2 oz chrome blue Original Rat L Trap. She was his fourth keeper of the day and was caught around 1:30 in the afternoon out of San Miguel. In a protected creek arm that he found in practice that was holding a few solid fish. Fishing shallow flats, ditches and drains to catch his limit that day!

In second was fellow Vidor club angler Nathan Wolfgang with 5 for 15.71.  Rounding out the Top-3 was BJ Tarr with 5 for 14.76, anchored by a 7.47 toad which earned tournament Big Bass.

Thank you to The BASS Club and Katy Bassmasters for assisting with set-up & weigh-in duties.

Right in the heart of the spawn, our next event will be March 19th will be our 4th event at Lake Conroe out of April Plaza Marina.

Special thanks to Swagger Tungsten for being a sponsor this year.  Be sure and see your club president for a special discount code for purchase.

Event #2 is in the books! Huge congrats to Rolando Nandin for securing the win and big bass! Jacob Moeller got 2nd, Ote Shaw got 3rd, and Jesus Reyes got 4th! The south wind made things pretty hairy at the end of the day. We had and angler flip his kayak and was not able to recover […]
